Online Notepad

Free online notepad with tabs, auto-save, and syntax highlighting.
100% private, no download or signup. Everything stays in your browser.

An online notepad that remembers what you wrote

Open the page, start typing, close the tab. Your notes are still here next time, because they were saved to your own device instead of somebody's server. No account, no install, no sync you didn't ask for.

A tab for every note

Keep a shopping list, a draft email, and a code snippet open side by side. Double-click a tab to rename it, and switch between notes without losing your place — including your scroll position and folded sections.

100% private and local

Nothing you type is uploaded. Every keystroke is auto-saved to your browser's own local storage, which means we cannot read your notes even if we wanted to. Open the Network tab and watch: no requests go out.

Syntax highlighting built in

Pick a language and get colour-coded editing for 20+ of them — JavaScript, Python, JSON, HTML, CSS, SQL, YAML, GraphQL and more — plus one-click formatting and code folding when a note turns into code.

Fast, and works offline

It runs on Monaco, the editor engine behind VS Code, so it opens instantly and handles long documents without lag. Once the page has loaded you can keep writing with no connection at all.

Who is this notepad for?

Developers

Tidy up a JSON payload, format a YAML config, or park a code snippet somewhere safe without launching a heavy IDE.

Students and writers

Keep a separate tab per class or per chapter, write without distractions, and let every draft save itself as you go.

Professionals

Draft an email or take meeting notes on a machine you don't own, and download the file when you're done — nothing is left on a server.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about the notepad.

Is this online notepad really free?

Yes. Every feature is free and there is no signup, no trial, and no paid tier to unlock tabs or saving. The site is funded by ads on the page.

Is it really 100% client-side?

Yes. Your tabs are stored entirely in your browser using local storage. No file or text you type is ever uploaded to a server — you can confirm it yourself in your browser's Network tab.

Can I use the notepad offline?

Yes. Once the page has loaded you can disconnect and keep editing; your changes keep saving locally and will still be there when you come back online.

How do I rename a tab?

Double-click the tab title at the top of the editor to edit it inline. Press Enter to save the name or Escape to cancel.

Which file types can I open?

Use the Open button to load common text formats from your device — .txt, .md, .json, .js, .ts, .html, .css, .yaml, .sql, .py, .go, .rb, .php, .c, .cpp, .cs, .graphql and more. The language is detected automatically.

Where are my notes stored, and are they backed up?

In your browser's localStorage, on the device you're using. They are not backed up anywhere and they will be lost if you clear your browsing data, so use the Download button to export anything you need to keep.
